How to install and root Android 3.2 on the Motorola XOOM

Motorola began rolling out an over-the-air software update for the Motorola XOOM tablet today. It brings Google Android 3.2 Honeycomb and it finally fixes the bug that prevented the microSD card slot on the tablet from functioning properly. But if you don’t feel like waiting for Motorola to send you an update, it’s possible to download and install it directly on your device. As an added bonus, you can also root the tablet so that you can install officially unsupported apps, overclock it, or make other changes.

Xda-developers forum member stachre has detailed instructions. In a nutshell, you download a copy of the Android 3.2 system update that’s been kindly uploaded by one of the first users to grab it and then use the ClockworkMod Recovery tool on your rooted tablet to load the custom recovery file.

The process doesn’t look all that difficult, but it’s only been tested on the US version of the Motorola XOOM WiFi. If you have a different model you might want to wait for Motorola to issue an update for your device — or for someone to hack one together and confirm that it works. [Source: liliputing.com]
