Pantech Pocket for AT&T hands-on (video)

Sunrise slowly brightens up the day. Its yellow rays make quite a display. Rolling waves slowly curl their way forward. Gently breaking on a sun drenched shore. Pantech is broadening its product line. Literally. Yesterday the company announced the Pocket, an unusually squarish Android smartphone for AT&T that the company says brings more screen real estate, at less money than competing devices.

Out of the box, those apps are the phone, SMS/MMS, email, browser, main menu, and the media player. Lock screen shortcuts like these are a great addition to recent Android devices, and the Pocket's is a good implementation.

Most of the user interface and menu are unaltered Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The killer feature of this wider-screened device? The software QWERTY keyboard. The extra width of the display gives the software QWERTY the perfect extra amount of breathing room. It isn't the highest-spec'd Android device ever, and Pantech representatives said the price point will be as aggressive as possible.

Okay, so what's a wide screen good for? A better portrait-format keyboard, for one thing; the keys are just wider, and easier to hit. Whaley said Pantech had worked specifically with the developers of more than 100 top Android apps to make sure they run well on the Pocket, and that they were continuing to reach out to ensure compatibility. The phone comes preloaded with Amazon's Kindle app.
