The Acer Iconia Tab A100 7 Inch Tablet Android may be shipping with the Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system, but what is with Acer's 10-inch tablet? It looks like those who will pick up the tab Iconia A500 have to wait a couple of weeks. Acer is expected to start pushing out a software update for the tablet from 25 August.
Frankly, users will likely notice much difference between Android 3.1 and Android 3.2 on a 10-inch tablet. One of the most important features in the latest version of the mobile operating system from Google's system is the support for devices with smaller, lower resolution displays, such as the A100 tablet. But there is one good reason to look forward to this update: Android 3.2 offers better support for tablet applications developed for Android.
Honeycomb tablets have been shipping in February, but there are still only a few hundred applications specially developed for Android tablets. There are hundreds of thousands of apps for Android smartphones written though. While most of these applications can be scaled to fit on larger displays, some look funny on a 10-inch tablet.
Android 3.2 avoids this problem by effectively you can emulate a lower screen resolution on a honeycomb tablet, so that applications that otherwise would not fill the whole screen now.
The 25th August date comes from Acer Malaysian Facebook page. I'm having a hard time believing Acer push out the software update is first in Malaysia, so I guess we will see a global roll-out to on or about the date.
